The trek to Peb Fort, also known as Vikatgad, offers a thrilling adventure amidst the picturesque landscape of the Sahyadri mountain range. As you walk along the railway tracks, accompanied by beautiful waterfalls and breathtaking scenery, you'll feel like you're living in a dream.
The fort derives its name from the Goddess Pebi, located at the base of the fort. Historical records suggest that Shivaji Maharaj used the caves on the fort for grain storage. One of the caves on the fort is currently occupied by disciples of Swami Samarth, a great saint, who have made significant contributions to the fort's development over the past decade. They have diligently maintained the cleanliness and dignity of the fort.
There are meditation caverns on the fort, which are located underground and in good condition. These caverns require crawling to enter, and only one person can enter at a time. During the monsoon, two of these caverns filled with water, adding to the mystique of the fort. To reach the top of the fort, one needs to climb the fort's wall, and from there, you can witness the breathtaking view of the ridge connecting the mountains of Matheran and Peb. It truly feels like standing on top of the world.
On the other side of the fort, you'll find a temple dedicated to a deity and a large cistern. The disciples are in the process of constructing a new temple here. It's a great place to rest and spend some time. The highlight of the trek is the beautiful waterfall on the way to the fort. In the monsoon, the surrounding scenery becomes even more marvelous, and you can enjoy the view from the cave.
From the fort, you can also see the magnificent pinnacles of Navara-Navari, Bhatoba, and Irshaal, as well as the forts of Chanderi, Prabalgad, Malanggad, and Nakhind. The trek to Peb Fort is enjoyable in all seasons, offering a delightful experience for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike.
